I was fascinated by the script and milieu of Thuppakki: Santhosh Sivan

Award winning internationally known cameraman turned director Santosh Sivan is elated that his work in Vijay’s AR Murgadoss directed Thuppakki has been appreciated and the film is turning out to be a blockbuster. In an exclusive interview to SREEDHAR PILLAI, Sivan opens up on Thuppakki and a lot more. Excerpts

How was it working with Vijay?

Vijay is very disciplined and complete professional in his work and had no star airs. In Mumbai he worked like any other unit member and is keen to learn more. I like his skin tone in Thuppakki where all the other characters are north Indians, loved the contrast.

How did Thuppakki become such a big hit ?

I think everything fell into a place. It had good content, a star with a huge reach and a director who led from the front. More than anything else it was team work of the entire unit who worked in the film.
The song ‘Google, Google ‘has become a hit and its picturisation is being talked about. Please comment.
I loved doing that song. We shot the song in four days in an actual Bangkok night club using two cameras. There is lot of colour in every frame of that song and maybe I liked it more because for a fleeting second the camera is focussed on me and Murgadoss. (Laughs)

Thuppaki Review By "The Hindu"

Plot: A military officer attempts to hunt down a terrorist, and the two unleash a chain of mind games.

Bottomline: A taut thriller that comes from a good team.

Bring together an enviable team like director A.R. Murugadoss, cinematographer Santosh Sivan, actor Vijay and editor Sreekar Prasad and what you get is a slick action thriller. Thuppakki, in one line, has a military officer hunting down a terrorist in a bid to de-activate a massive network of sleeper cell terrorists in Mumbai.

Jagdish (Vijay) is among a battalion of military officers that comes to Mumbai on vacation. Jagdish is also a secret Defence Intelligence Agent who cannot lie low, much to the irritation of his friend and sub inspector Sathyan. During a bus ride, an attempt to frisk passengers for a lost wallet leads Jagdish to something much bigger. Within minutes, the bus is blown into pieces and Jagdish helps cops nab the carrier of the bomb, who escapes from the hospital only to be caught by Jagdish again. Using tact, Jagdish follows one clue at a time hoping to track down the terrorist on whose orders the sleeper cell terrorists plan to cause mayhem in Mumbai.

The terrorist (Vidyut Jamwal) is not an easy man to trap. Realising someone outside of the police force is on his trail, Vidyut plays the game equally well. The cat and mouse game continues till the final confrontation.

In between all this, there’s the yes-no-yes-no romance between Jagdish and Nisha (Kajal Agarwal), with some hindrance coming in the form of actor Jayaram, a senior military officer. Murugadoss tries to weave in romance within the action thriller but in some places, the scenes end up like a sore thumb. Also, randomly placed song sequences slow down the pace of the film.

Why doesn’t a military officer take the help of Mumbai police, barring his friend who is just an S.I? And how do Vijay’s peers, who get involved in a well coordinated hunt for the terrorists, not think of reporting the fear of a larger enemy to the cops? Questions like these remain. In the end, what works for Thuppakki is a talented team that rises above the loopholes to present an engaging entertainer.

Vijay is in good form, coming up with a mature and restrained performance where required. He is in his elements in the dance sequences and proves he is one of the best dancers in South Indian cinema, yet again. Kajal Agarwal does the bubbly girl act that’s required of her quite well.

Cinematographer Santosh Sivan and editor Sreekar Prasad are a big asset to Thuppakki. Santosh Sivan and team do a commendable job in the crowded alleys of Mumbai, especially in the pre-interval scene where Vijay and his 11 associates close in on 12 sleeper cell terrorists. Even in simple shots, Sivan’s camera works its magic, gently playing with light and shadow, or adding a warm glow of sunshine with much élan. Sreekar Prasad’s editing gives the film the required pace in the crucial scenes. The songs (composed by Harris Jayaraj) are found wanting, in comparison with the originals in Tamil.

One of the first promos of the film, with snapshots of Mumbai, lurking terror, the antagonist threatening Vijay to which he responds ‘I am waiting’ went viral on social networks. The wait, clearly, has been worth it for the audience. And the man who’s probably having the last laugh is Murugadoss.

Kajal Aggarwal has a meaty role in Thuppakki. Her role is not limited to be an arm-candy of Vijay in Thuppakki. The story revolves around a youngster from a Mumbai-based Tamil family and his decisions he takes after his life undergoes a sudden turn.

Story:-
Vijay is a Captain in Indian Army. When a vacation he came to see his family in Mumbai. He is suddenly taken to Nisha's (Kajal's) house to approve, but he doesn't like her. He later falls in love with her after watching her in a boxing ring. After a series of romantic encounters. Jagdish runs behind the terrorist, who is then wounded, hospitalized and escapes.

Jagadish planning and execution to walk off with the terrorist who is on his way to plant more bombs in different parts of Mumbai. More than guns and bullets we are treated to a mind game. Blank and without emotion Jagdish takes on the terrorist (Vidyut) and uses very few people to navigate and reach him. What happens next is to watched in theatres....

Final Verdict:

Vijay Brillant effort, A.R.M's excellent execution, Santhosh Sivan's Cinematography, Harris' Music & Exellent BGM wil make ypu watch this movie again & again.

Vijay, Kaajal Agarwal, Jayaram, Satyan and others have acted in the film Thuppaki. A.R.Murugadoss have diredted it. Santhosh Sivan have handled the camera work, while Music Sensation Harris Jayaraj have composed the music for this film. Kalaipuli S.Thanu have produced it.

Vijay will be acting as an army man from mumbai. This is what leaked from the Thuppaki crew and other informations where kept confidential. After Ghajini remake in Hindi A.R.M wanted to make a direct film in Hindi and started the thuppaki script. He decided to cast in Akshay Kumar and the producer were also finalised. In the mean while he was delayed in the making of 7amArivu and post production works. Once 7amArivu is released he came to know that Vijay's dates are free. So he got permission from the producers who accepted Thuppaki in hindi todirect Vijay in tamil. They noded ok for it and thus Thuppaki started first in tamil.

When the First Look Poster was released there were lot of issues raised and wer sorted out then came the title issue.After the title issue were soreted out the audio with teaser were released. The Audio of Thupppaki came on to the biggest hit of 2012 and the word "Im Waiting" which Vijays say's in the teaser became the favourite word for their fans. Even twitter is filled with those word during the release of the teaser.

A.R.M told that those who dont like Vijay too will like him after the movie and Vijay praised him as a Kutty Maniratnam duriing the audio launch. Each song is different in its genere. Google Google went on to become a huge hit with Madan Karky handling the lyrics and Vijay wit Andrea singing the song.

During the telecast of Nanban Vijay Tv got the maximum TRP rating and so it bough Thuppaki for a huge amount. With Vijay's Mass, ARM's Brillance, Santhosh Sivan's Excellence, Sreekar Prasad's Experience & Harris' Musical Influence Thuppaki will fire in all corners!!!!

Vijay's next movie Thuppaki will be reeleased simultaenously in Tamil And Telugu and the audio launch of the movie happened last monday in Shilpa Kala Vedika in Hi-Tech city in Hyderbad. Director A.R Murugadoss, Vijay, Kajal Agarwal were present during the launch. Vijay spoked in telugu while addressing the fans and were wowed by the fans the way he speaks.
